Satpura National Park is a beautiful forest located in the Hoshangabad (Narmadapuram) district of Madhya Pradesh which covers an area of 524 km2. The name of this park is taken from the Sanskrit word Satpura which means seven hills because this park is spread over Satpura hills and highlands of Central India. This park is a peaceful jungle, away from busy city life. The hilly terrains, deep gorges, lot of mammals, and wide variety of bird species make this park a beautiful place. This wild Satpura National Park was established in 1981 and the total area of Satpura Tiger Reserve along with the adjoining Bori and Pachmarhi wildlife sanctuaries is 2133.30 km2.

Satpura Tiger Reserve is located in the south of the Narmada River and the forest area is rich in biodiversity and many endangered species can also be found here. Satpura Tiger Reserve has high ranges of the Pachmarhi plateaus that are covered by Sal forests, whereas dense teak forests are spread over its lower hill ranges. In 1999, this reserve was declared the first biosphere reserve of Madhya Pradesh because of this specialty. Here, 26 species of the Himalayan region and 42 species of Nilgiri areas can be found, and because of this Satpura Tiger Reserve is also known as the northern extremity of Western Ghats.
As the name says, this place is an important conservation area for Tigers, so this park is a home for them. It’s also home to almost 14 endangered species, among which Giant Squirrel, Indian Skimmer, Black Bellied Tern, Leaf-nosed Bat, etc. are the specialty of the area. Others include leopard, sambar, chital, Indian muntjac, nilgai, four-horned antelope, chinkara, wild boar, bear, black buck, fox, porcupine, flying squirrel, and mouse deer, etc. You can spot more than 300 species of birds here including Malabar Pied Hornbill, Malabar Whistling Thrush, Madhya Pradesh's state bird Paradise Flycatcher (Doodhraj), and migratory birds like Bar-headed Geese, Pintails, Spot-bills, spoon-bills, etc. also appear in large groups during the autumn. Eurasian otters have also been seen here in the past.
You can enjoy different types of activities in this area like jeep safaris, elephant rides, boat rides, canoeing, and trekking. In this zone of the park, only 30 vehicles are allowed.
These two come under the buffer zone near Madhai. You can visit the area by private safari vehicle. 28 vehicles are permitted to enter for morning and evening safaris.
It’s a hill station containing waterfalls and scenic viewpoints. You can reach this area by private vehicle.
In this zone, tourists can go on their pollution-free, four-wheeled vehicles capable of going through the rough forest terrain.
